Global health challenges facing the International Health Organization

Below we review the main challenges that affect our efforts to promote human health, ensure the well-being of communities, and achieve sustainable development at the global level.

  • Climate change and its health effects Climate changes pose a growing threat to public health, as they lead to higher rates of environment-related diseases such as malaria and respiratory diseases. Extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, affect food security and increase population displacement, adding to the pressure on health systems. The organization faces the challenge of strengthening health resilience, providing emergency plans to cope with climate crises.
  • Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) Non-communicable diseases such as cancer and heart disease are the number one cause of death globally. With the escalation of unhealthy lifestyles, such as smoking and physical inactivity, the burden on health systems is increasing. Who is working to develop prevention strategies and promote healthy lifestyles, but weak health systems in developing countries complicate these efforts.

  • Spread of infectious diseases and pandemic preparedness Infectious disease outbreaks are always a challenge, as epidemics can spread across borders quickly, as happened with the COVID-19 pandemic. This requires health systems to be prepared by strengthening local capacities in rapid response, developing strong international cooperation networks, while continuing challenges in the equitable provision of vaccines and medicines.

  • Health inequality The gap in access to health services is still evident between countries and within communities. Marginalized and poor groups suffer from poor access to basic care, which increases their disease burden. Who is working to push for comprehensive health policies and achieve equity in the distribution of resources, but this remains a difficult goal to achieve due to the economic and political disparities between countries.
